Central Truth: Living in the Spirit is a worship lifestyle.
Key Verse: Psalm 34:1
I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips (NIV).
Commentary & Application:
1. David Continually Praised God (2 Samuel 22:1-7, 17-20)
David learned early not to depend on his own strength and ability. He looked to God for protection and security. He offered praise to God who delivered him from his enemies and the hand of Saul (2 Smauel 22:1). He likened the protection the Lord provided him to natural places of refuge, such as rocks and fortresses (verses 2,3). He knew that weapons and shields could not save him and that human authority or power could not deliver him. That's why David called out to the Lord when death appeared to surround him and there was no human way of escape (verses 4-7).
We are blessed today with many forms of help. We have great armies with mighty weapons to defend our land. We have hospitals and doctors to treat our sicknesses. We have law enforcement and home alarms to protect us. We have banks and financial institutions to watch over our money. Yet we must be careful never to place our security in man's abilities and powers. God can use all the above as tools to benefit His people, but true security is realized only when we put our trust in Him.
Because he depended on God, David was rescued from his enemies (verses 17-20). God proved His faithfulness to David again and again.
We can trust God to be faithful to us as well. His timing may be different than what we might desire, but we can be sure God will deliver us. He delights in us and hears when we cry out to Him.
If God is always faithful, why do our prayers sometimes seem to go unanswered?
2. David Had Confidence in God (2 Samuel 22:29-37,50,51)
David had put his trust in God and God had proved He is worthy of all praise. Much of David's life was filled with danger and war, and God had always proved faithful when David needed Him (2 Samuel 22:29-37). God had given David direction when he didn't know what to do. Also, God had always given him the strength and ability he needed in battle. The gods of the other nations could not stand before the God of Israel because they were not really gods at all. God had continually given David victory.
David knew he could trust God to fulfill every promise He had made to him about the future. Because God had never failed him in the past, David knew He would never fail him in the future. This applied not only to this life but to the life to come. David beautifully expressed in Psalm 23 that the Lord as his shepherd would meet his needs and would provide a place for him in His presence forever.
David refused to take the flory for all he had been able to do. He was quick to give testimony to the nations around him that it was God who had chosen him and established his kingdom (verses 50,51).
God is good to everyone who seeks Him and trusts Him. You can have confidence in God. He hears your prayers and is working in your life to help you in this world and prepare for eternal life in the world to come.
How can we be sure God will meet all our needs?
3. David Was Inspired by God (2 Samuel 23:1-5)
Second Samuel 23 records the last words of David. These last words were a mesage fiven to him from God. David recognized that God was the One who had raised him up to his position as king of Israel. God's anointing and inspiring him allowed him to be a "sweet psalmist of Israel" (verse 1, KJV), one who was priviledged to be a spokesperson for God.
God revealed to David that when a king ruled righteously in awe of and respect for God, it would bring the sense of well-being that is felt on a cloudless daybreak. A righteous ruler would produce in the people a sense of freshness and new life (verses 3,4). This gives us insight into the type of leaders God desires people to be.
In verse 5, David was expressing his awe and praise for what God has done and was doing in his life. God not only established David's dynasty, but had promised that it would continue forever. This was totally God's doing. God would finish what He had promised to do by securing David's salvation and fulfilling his desires.
David was not demanding that God fulfill His promises. David was just rejoicing in the awesome privilege of being a receiver of God's blessings.
We are not to take God's blessings for granted. We are to rejoice in His blessings and give praise and honor to Him, for He is a great God and He blesses those who love Him.
How does God speak to people today?
Discipleship in Action
For what will you remembered by those who know you? Will you be remembered as a constant complainer and faultfinder or as one who loved Jesus and looked for the good in what was happening in your life and in the lives of those around you?
To be the second kind of person, you must focus on how great God is and how good He is to you. You must spend more time with Him in prayer and in His Word as you try to live to please Him. Work to develop a lifestyle that is filled with praise to God and is guided by an attitude of gratitude. Learn to yield to the leading of the spirit daily, for living in the spirit can lead to a worshipful lifestyle.

Twenty. What is the last words of David, and we are looking at second Samuel twenty two, but also Psalm thirty four, one of David's Psalms once( father. We are grateful to you. Thank you that you look beyond. I also got to see the need of our lives in Lord that you are a God of compassion and one who touches our lives and changes us and we just pray that as we study the lesson today, we might find the truth and find the example that of David's life that we might apply that to our only pray in Jesus name amen. So the last words of David and the key verses Psalm thirty four one. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth with the NIV says, I will extol the Lord at all times. The essential truth, living in the Spirit is a worshipful lifestyle toilet talk about that a worshipful lifestyle, but if one does a worshipful life stuff in LA when we bulldoze fans on non- people instead of down the aisles down down down there on high-end of the better though, forget it. But the best time feeling is not airwaves you are you are violating the him at. I confess I believe second single twenty one the air-conditioning of the Junior open the door. They were thank the Lord, the words of the song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies from the hands all inside the Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. My God is my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my Savior from violent man. You saved me. He reached down from on high and called me a jimmy out of deep waters. The rescued me from the powerful enemy from my follows were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support processing the Lord is my supper, though hard with my support day he brought me out of there into a spacious place. He rescued me from because he delighted in me you are my lambs oh Lord, the Lord turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against the true with my God, I can scale the wall. As for God, his way is perfect. The word of the Lord is Wallace is a shield for all who take refuge in him, for who is God beside the Lord and who is the rock, except our God. It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. These are the last words of David, the Oracle of David son of Jesse, and Oracle. The man exalted by the most high. The man anointed by God of Jacob Israel Singer, house phone. This veritable Morris. They threw me his word was on my time, the God of Israel smote the rock of Israel said to me when one rules over man in righteousness when he rules and the fear of God is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning like the brightness after the rain that brings the grass from the earth is not my house right with God as Enoch made me with an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part, will he not bring me bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire peace. This is the present level of the final words of David and we often think of no, I see a lot of a lot of people who are on their deathbed and very few are ever on only recently have I heard of one individual brings a family and Bill pronounces it is a godly man pronounces his blessing pronounces his is aware his prosthetic message to his children and grandchildren in a day or two later dies. It's all that's a very rare surviving a rare situation rather than normals and I think that in our life. We we are. We don't. I don't know if we carry the idea of our responsibility to speak the blessing of God upon our own life, and upon the lives of others know we we often think of correcting but we ever think of and it's important that that we blessing of God, and all I said this, I will benefit and ideas that when we stopped celebrating with our children start correcting young like babies. You know Jackson is the all in it all was will want to thought and these maladies, but then you know you and I want a wonderful day in my reason upon you while I was all right, everything is not correcting and when we went there. We stopped celebrating and start correctly and how to win. Does God stop celebrating when does God stop celebrating our relationship with him and start correcting us for all the things we do wrong and the idea behind the being the admonition is he doesn't be done. Celebrate now with e-mail. So God doesn't change in his perspective towards us. So what drives us towards us use the blasts in all reward( always they would give you for Jim's. He removed the barriers that are there irregular. He removed the barriers in our life and in any and any any cousins have us all. I didn't blessing and rewarding now if we can, given the context that are standing into Rob God 's blessing from getting to our lives. It isn't that God stopped sending it. It interrupts it drank some my thing is continually coming from when does God stop thinking. Good of you never what about when you said this guy stopping and going to waste stop receiving his blessing, and if we don't change our ways and a lot harder and I was thinking about David here in with whatever we think of Damon L we go inside and outside. We got a think about balancing out that criticism... Harvard and it wasn't the nose, a lowly white guy here never made a mistake. Well, how is David and end up with this declaration needs a man after God 's own heart. How is it that he has up with this writing the Psalms in writing these blessings in writing these things, these wonderful things about God. And here is a man who sent with mashing up and down killed Uriah the Hittites and young children, people, and yet his move. You know he's talking about this wonderful relationship with God, but you forget while kind of thought that I had was in our life. We don't have enough to move on to so were always remembering Arafat Witt when we have how was David going to continue to be a conquering qualities they hold his nation to gather if he was continually remembering all of his past failures. So, all as eighteen behind two bit concerned about all Israel and the borders and boundaries because they did have in our lines of demarcation, your Your Honor 's done it down the street here, and you find where we meet you move into Cambria County leaves our second, it's right there and all you drive across United States. You now have the signs you're entering, leaving no Highland entering Illinois you are you are you entering this time. So when even on the GPS system. It has little bots that show you. This is the this is the barrier between while Israel had no borders. They had neighboring countries neighboring communities. They were constantly rating the people who live near what was considered the border trying to expand their territories, and there was this constant threats of war and battle but so David rejoice in the Lord, his focus was on God 's focus was on God and he had to see himself as a person. The man, but also as a person who was relying upon God for his very existence, and that is his whole purpose was to bring honor and glory to God because God is one who chose him right so let's look at this and then we can pull more out of it as weak as we go through the credit report for outcomes is what they born more out of your so often note that the final word someone has to speak is a significant importance. We had Moses as he climbs Mount Nebo we have the Last Supper and Jesus command to the disciples and at the end of this life we have some similar differences as to heal his life. The power is maintaining that position David's ups and downs continue into the twilight of his reign and as you as usual, his military victories are second to none. So as we were, as we see him hit his military. His military victories. Now it's it's difficult for us to to comprehend this, but if you interview the think aloud and in those days you had a few thousand men showing up on the battlefield and at TL. You have no intelligence as into wet what is their strength are very little intelligence is the strength in all their tactics and you know all this tends that so David relied upon God in his instincts and his know that boys that would speak inside of him about what he should do how he seduces out David became a great military genius, but was it because he was so focused on and knowing his his enemy or was he focused on knowing God, and having an insight into the application up the word of God, and the inside of God with the tactical maneuver. Okay upbringing of his of his face in his battle and this is where I was wondering about our life. What are your tactical maneuver as you face your battle as you face him copies of face daily life isn't that we don't have enough battles is it that we don't have enough life-changing battles now hear the whole nation rises and falls on this man's decision know how our society. We married out where the great critics out there anybody who makes a video who opens her mouth in a so even critics of those adults say no when we look at our life. I we have we adapted our society 's perception of being are our own worst critic, or do we accept the Bible 's perspective of being on how word to to to approach our life. So when we look at the battles that we face are we paying attention to the word. We already know. Are we becoming skeptics like the society we live in faith, our statement of man after God 's own heart. We know the newsstand. We know they did wrong, but he that he saw God, and he was allowed. He allowed the forgiveness of God to erase his past and he accepted the problems that he is his sin brought into his life, except that it and had to deal with that based upon knowing that God was good to see them through. Even though he was the initiator of this in the past it on the family conflict and so on that, that that is his family was, and that came about because of his sin with that she made and Uriah, so he actually said that in our life and are we accepting our lot in life and there are certain things that they are going to follow us. We still have to decide we can't thank follow this morning. The flash I have offered to be removed and Gaza, now my grace is sufficient for you. It's how they did two things in balance. The two elder one, the finance phenotype keeps me humble. I can spell with nine South not to give a boy so. But anyhow, let's read second Daniel, while personal database, famous for his composition of Psalms is poetic hymns set the music for the life of the nation and here we find one of the typical of his cock on his 's letters and what we read in second Samuel is identical. The Psalm eighteen what we read hearing seconds Sandy was identical to what we read in Psalm eighteen and it is and that is the one commentary says it is an interesting double occurrence and what he's saying is that it was so important that it's allowed to be written in two different spots with two different yell two different authors writing about David riding the Psalm but then Samuel here writing the context of what's taken place, and so it's combined, and it's it's the least to 's to two distinct times where this. This is written, but in a basically telling us how valuable account for yes ha ha what Dave is saying here verses one to three okay so this this Psalm is introduced. Similarly, leading to Deuteronomy thirty two, where Moses also charges the nation that I got poetic poetic structure that Moses put out, and David sang to the Lord, the words of the song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all of his enemies and from the hand of Saul the introduction verse one is also found that the Internet in Psalm eighteen, but neither houses accurately locate the poem within the life of David, so what were looking here is where is where is this taking place in David's life doubt he is writing the song he's putting it together, but it is at first glance it seems inserted into an awkward place in the narrative, sandwiched between the further counsel David 's military machinery so as were reading about David's conquests, I is rereading out no indicator of this is the battles saw these are the battles of his relatives in the battles of David and these are endless. This this is where Damon, Concord, solid solid. This is where and in all the sudden bully got a solemn throw right in the middle, a and why, why does it sound with right in the middle of all of this while many refer to it as kind of pulling things together that we become focused on what were doing and not upon the motive behind overdue. So in this setting. This sandwich right here in this Psalm, and what is what is placed here. It's telling us that this is what motivated David and check David grounded in the midst of all of his battles of all the things he was doing this is thrown right in the middle of it to say to us. This is where David is one thing, it was a man after God 's own heart that David may have done things wrong but he had a lot of things in the focus on Paul said it this way, forgetting those things which are behind, I press on. David did itself, we learn something from this. If that we've all failed with while saying we've all done something wrong, but how do we let it go. Learn our lesson and focus on God as our salvation arm rock, our fortress are Strong deliverer, even whenever we fail, we need more trials do any more things to go wrong in our life so that we can get focused again, how many things happening around you. Before we get focused on the things have to go right after we lose focus. I am in exactly the right until we lose focus. But what I didn't count for diet without good I am. I must be really good to look at all the things going right in my life. Yes, about the valve that must be looked all that going on in my life. One, what a terrible thing. God must be cursing. I so David begins by announcing not only the rocksolid character of God but also his own need to be saved so we have to walk solid character of God. This is where we have to anchor, K, where we anchored. We hate ourselves in the character of God what is God like what is his character. Let what will be like to be best friends with God. Whatever character weaving, you should be doing that. Don't get too excited the last overjoyed on this article, please think about it that is holding the image that we have of God is, you can't make you happy and you can't be sorrowful, ill rejoice always, but not too much. What is the character of God what he wanted the easy one. Find fault with me. It wasn't my fault with us. We don't even have a prayer of unintended soul and God multiplied. Follow what is his characters, characters, redemptive and God 's character is redemptive, wisely redeeming us if the purpose and got has a purpose that he has a purpose five. The purpose that has a purpose. That means you live each have a purpose alarm, multiple purposes. So David was able to IP goodness knows we readers we begin, we begin to see how that feeling. He was able to look beyond his failures to how he is an individual and a chain how to operate a nation under the authority of God, you and I as individuals operate our life under the authority of God. Verse seven is not in our list of things. Jeremy is the Scripture text. Second, seven twenty two forty seven seventy had an open reverse seven okay so out of my distress I cried to the Lord, and he heard me out of his temple. There is no temple and hasn't been built yet. Damon as a way of seeing things. It doesn't exist. All we recall that they gave out a way of seeing Angel on the Temple of God. He hardly any heat your house like God is that God has his place and where God is he hears me any answers me from this place and how they were down in a window in the concept of time that he was he was on. He was on Dana had planned for the Temple. Many Quenneville, Solomon would build the Temple and install in the plans. Damon is seeing God respond to him from the plan is seeing God speaking him from the plans from the futures of work, speaking from the holy place now what is the .net the one of the plan that he has for us. What is it that God speaks less than the present to take us towards what worked, what he has for David was able to see that any spoken and this one is over. Read on verse. Verse seventeen, he said to me recently from above. It took me. He drew me out for many waters if water symbolizes a chaos. A prime mail like the video from the deep waters. It's like before creation before there was a separation of the all the land and will and and water. There was this chaos and two. Four the, the writers and for that time it was it was a symbol of of chaos and and and wit, which is that out of chaos was a safe descent from. He said from above. It took me. He drew me out of many waters gotten screwed me out of the chaos. God saw me in the chaos and he drew me out of it, so, God sees me in the chaos, the difficulties of my life and that is not a call place for us to be forgot to see what delivered me from my strong enemies, and from then that hated me and a half or they were too strong for me, what is David say is weak. These things are too much for me to handle these things are too much for me to handle. God saw me in a chaos truly out. I'm saying you is a shepherd boy, now King and his enemies were too strong for God Islam in this chaos, and that I was. I was not sufficient. I'm at. I myself am not sufficient for the task that is in front of me David. David's enemies would have overtaken him long ago with David triumph over a giant champion against all odds. David took it off against all odds. David took on the difficult, not because of his great skill, but because of his great faith saw God if Steve God pulls us out of the chaos. God has a purpose and plan for life, God speaks to us from his holy place, then, is there that we can't really handle, they prevented me in the day they may prevented me that my calamity, but the Lord was my stay. He brought me out into a spacious place the rescued me. Besides, because he delighted in me. Dave you can't come up with no other explanation other than that God was able to just help them and see him through, and that in the days of battle that they release thousands of men in the battlefield and the battle could start at any time with David saw the hand of God upon him and upon Israel and he was able to make decisions. This is his soldiers went about and I think that in our lives that as we go about our daily lives were able to make decisions because God 's. He got has brought us out, put us in this place and heating heat. It is in all, we feel it is a tight squeeze in their styles of the news. This case is thousands of men fighting on the battlefield and David seizes large place that God has delivered them, and is able to maneuver things around in small areas, as if they were large place is able to do that, that the intricacies of that to make the wind that this is not thinking about David Michael. Whenever he was the race whenever he would do the downhill and they would reach seventy, eighty, eighty five miles an hour and he would be going downhill, he said, and you have your helmet on and you get an attack and whenever you're going down the hill at these high rate of speed, your hands out in front of him. He said you know you're going fast. I've never been the decision know you're going fast. When everything goes silent inside of your head because of the aerodynamics of the wind hitting your hand in breaking outside of your help and then he says it's like being in slow motion. I can imagine going eighty miles an hour filling like slow motion, but so as he would yell your going eighty miles an hour any as it feels like an eternity to get down the field like a half hour to get down the hill. The Domino admin have to do half minutes of an is feels like a half hour an hour to get down the hill limiting those silent, everything slows down. He's able to focus on the course and and as I read this am I thought of how that David was able to see things in a different perspective that God was able to help them see anything in and our lives. We whenever were focused on God what is God 's perspective if we have the right respect the right image of God. The character of God. If we have the right character. We have a way of it, and then we know what God is thinking. You know God 's plan so we don't have to doubt ourselves and our God, the Lord record rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands. Half the rate recompensed me as David in what ways they got with what we write something like that. I think I'm beyond disgusting, but only getting less and less. We would write something like that. Why, because we sin, David understood the salvation and grace of God to the extent that he was able to write that October, going for me. That's over now that so would so be aware of the grace of the mercy of God has removed us and removed that since so far from us that the Lord is reportedly warning us according to my righteousness in my righteousness is the only others are just as all our righteousness is as filthy rides, so it isn't like the righteousness that I have has been imparted to us. The righteousness of God is imparted by faith in our walk with God. It is given to us in so it is in the righteousness that I possess is not something that I have accumulated. It's what God has given so as I receive God 's blessing in my life as I received this this relationship with God is, I received the word of God into my mind and my heart and my actions as I receive this incident businesses. This is my righteousness. You are my righteousness, so, God rewards is according to the righteousness of himself. It is inside of us. So God is not rewarding. You according to your sins. We did that, we'd all be in hell is rewarding us according to his righteous whiteness. We have with God. Think about this. What is the rightness we have with God. We have salvation to God, you have no sin. Why spend forget. So what rights we have the righteousness of that right relationship with God imparted faith will has imparted a blessing to our life, a promise of future thing. So we go on with all those things and so we the Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hand. Now if I'm in. I read that I think they were here. The rest of the Damon isn't messed up is that the is got the understanding that he has been forgiven. I've kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God seat. What is statement is saying here is that God has selected me for his own purpose. I have to let go of my purpose in life failures so that I might receive the purpose of God in my life according to my purpose in my view now were still hung up on all the things we've done wrong. But according to God 's purpose in God 's new is looking at how our forgiveness and how that our relationship with him is taking us forward for our future David without responsibility. Indeed, David does not hesitate in jarring and I every this is all messed up in my copy here. I did it without risk, but without responsibility. Indeed, David doesn't hesitate in giving expression to his righteousness that can be that almost sounds like South Americans and themes, you know, like, really full of himself, but he remembers. However, that David would be the first to admit his imperfection. So Damon wasn't denying his imperfection. David wasn't denying his sins. He was declaring forgiveness of God. That's the difference. That's why he can write the things and that's what they are all life. We're not pretending that we done nothing wrong. We are declaring the righteousness of God. We are declaring the forgiveness of God where declaring the purpose of God. The future God what God has for us, for God is my land. You're my life in darkness there was no electricity so so in the darkness they couldn't turn on the switch with David in a what is he declaring he's declaring how God is taking care of him missing. This is the military victories that the leading of a nation. He wasn't. He was declaring it's like an end if we could if we could somehow get their own life. One way while standing, and we all remember what we've done wrong and so what are we doing about. We ask God for forgiveness, and then we move into the area. This is he has all of my righteousness. He is my foundation, my strength, my, my rock and my fortress. He is the one who say his promises are now in my life and that my hands are clean over here. Yes I know I said, but the grace of God 's forgiveness has cleanse me from all which this is all unrighteousness. By so, what are we going somewhere declaring what God is and then was able to make that distinction between his past and his failures and his present and future. That's lovely. I think that's what we see from the Psalms in the writings of David and his death that declaration that God is taking care of him, and he focuses on who God is God 's character, not on his failures and how he blew why does God had forgiven them he learned from his mistakes and he was going on quite a lesson. It's very is a very formless wildlife life lessons for us because sometimes. It even and our perspective, we we looked while I were David I certainly wouldn't say that what we are doing and what do we say we need to focus on what God has done for us. And yes, that is part of our life that God doesn't remember deliverable that against us. So he is our life, and this is his word, and we lived by his words Twenty.
