Ephesians 4:17-32
17) This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18) being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts;
19) who having become callous gave themselves up to lust, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20) But you did not learn Christ that way;
21) if indeed you heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus:
22) that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit;
23) and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
24) and put on the new man, that like God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.
25) Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members one of another.
26) "Be angry, and don‘t sin." Don‘t let the sun go down on your wrath,
27) neither give place to the devil.
28) Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need.
29) Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.
30) Don‘t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed to the day of redemption.
31) Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice.
32) Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.
Ephesians 2:1-3
1) You were made alive when you were dead through your trespasses and sins,
2) in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the powers of the air, of the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience;
3) among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
1 Kings 19:19-21
19) So he departed there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke [of oxen] before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed over to him, and cast his mantle on him.
20) He left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray you, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you. He said to him, Go back again; for what have I done to you?
21) He returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and killed them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave to the people, and they ate. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered to him.

This is a machine transcript of the sermon. It won't be completely accurate of what's said in the sermon.
I don't know why I like standing up here. On the my pastor's talk to being down there. So much better I can actually see everyone better. For whatever reason. Just so all of you know today is the first day we are actually live streaming from the church. I set that up for. But. She's here today. So I did watch during the. Worship aspect. Right when we were starting. And there were a couple people tuned in at that point. So people are looking. That's a good thing. So I to day. I have a message called Blast from the past. I wanted to make a really neat graphic. Of like back to the future and everything and I was like wait that's hope you're right infringement. I can't do that. So instead. I tried to dress. A little more along the lines of the message. Hence the Tupac shirt. Which at the moment is really warm. The primary scripture for today's message is coming from. If Eason's for. Seventeen through twenty two or thirty two and chapters one through three. Of. If Eason's. Paul has spoken. Of the change which had brought about in our lives for our good and for His glory. And Chapters four through six. Paul exhorts us as Christians to carry out our calling as Christians. Our text seventeen through twenty four describes. And very general terms the changes in our thinking behavior. Which being in Christ. Requires of us. Now I will attempt to read all of this. OK. If Eason's for. Verse seventeen. So I tell you this. And ist on it. And the Lord that. You must no longer live as the Gentiles do. And the futility of their thinking. They are darkened and their understanding and separated from the life of . Because of the ignorance that is and them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost. All sensitivity. They have given themselves over to sensuality. So as to indulge in every kind of. Impurity. And they're full of greed. That however is not the way of life you learned. When you heard about Christ. And were taught and him. In accordance with the truth. That is in Jesus. You were taught with regard to your former way of life. To put your old self. Which is being corrupted by its. Deceitful desires to be made new. And the at ude of your mind. And to put on the new self created to be like . And true righteousness and holiness. Therefore each of you must put off Osgood. And speak truthfully to your neighbor. For we are all members of one body and your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you're still angry. And do not give the devil a foothold. Anyone who has been stealing must deal no longer. But must work and doing something useful with our own hands. That they may have something to share with those in need. Do not let any one wholesome talk. Come out of your mouth. But only what is helpful for ability others up. According to their needs. And then it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of . With whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness rage and anger. Brawling and slander. Along with every form of malice. Be kind and comp ionate to one another for giving each other just as in Christ forgave you. That was a lot. OK so we can take this whole section. And actually break it down and. Four sections. Verses. Seventeen through nineteen. Paul writes concerning our new relationship to the world in which we live. Verses twenty and twenty one. Paul reminds us that in coming to faith in Christ learned a new way of life. Through Jesus who is the truth. Verses. Twenty two to twenty four. Part of scribes the Christians relationship to the flesh. And our old way of life. Kind of funny. Instead of putting life output file. Verses seventeen through twenty four are general in nature. From. Verse twenty five on. Paul gets very specific describing things that we shouldn't do. And what we must do and doing so. We conduct ourselves in accordance with our calling. And Jesus' teachings. So for the Fusion is for seventeen through nineteen I'm going to try and. Dive a bit more in-depth into the. Four sections. So starting at verse seventeen so I tell you this. And insist on it in the Lord. They must no longer live as the Gentiles do. And the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding. And separated from the life of because of the ignorance. And that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity they have given themselves over to. Sensuality so I was too indulgent. Every kind of. Impurity. And they were full of greed. That sounds really selfish doesn't it. I know. Back in my past. I've been fairly. Selfish and. Never really thought much about it. So as we look at these verses we need to remember what Paul has already said. About our previous condition. As unbelievers. Which is in. Fusions to one through three which I did not give Zach. So as for you. You are dead in your transgressions and sins. And which used to live when you followed the ways of this world and. Of the ruler of the Kingdom of the air. The Spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us. Also lived among them at one time. Gratifying the cravings over flesh and following its desires and thoughts like the rest. We were by nature do serving. Of Wrath. So the way I have this. I least like my interpretation of it so I guess you could call this as a notes instead of Cliff Notes or something on those lines. We were lifeless apart from Christ. Which whenever we are. Non-believers we really don't realize that. We're just going what. Ole. We're going to go through life and everything is fine and dandy. Not realizing that. Most of the time we're living in sin. Kind of like doing a. Everything is all about me forget about you. Sort of mentality. So. We were walking. According to the ways of the world. And according to the ful desires that are displayed to us so often. And of chasing I don't really watch too much T.V.. Just because who knows what you're going to see. Every now and then. There is a show that we like that will focus in on and watch. But. We try to make sure that has a good Christian standard and morals. To it and that we have been born again in Christ. We have to. We have been raised from our dead. They spiritually to newness of life. Because of this we are to renounce the world. And its dominion over us. This is what Paul. Urges us to do in these verses were slaves to our own fleshly desires and as believers. We are to put off fleshly. Things and put on the things of the Spirit. Being born again is meant to reverse the way. We once were. Apart from Christ. If we look at this second half of verse seventeen. We can break this down just a little further. So the first section of the second half. That you must no longer live as the Gentiles do. Faith in Christ The man's a radical change. So we can no longer be the person that we were. If we are in Christ. So the word is no longer which Paul emphasizes. In this means you have to stop doing it. Which seems fairly straightforward blatant. But there are plenty of things that's like. I don't want to give that up. Like I don't want to get my coffee up. Pretty good. Regardless of the past inverse of whatever it is that we enjoy doing may have to sell. So the words no longer indicate that the people Paul is addressing this letter to are now to renounce. And reject the previous way of life and live in a way that glorifies this command also states our new relationship to the world. Once we're part of the world and. Alienated from . Now as a believer in Christ. We are part of 's kingdom. But we are strangers. To the world. So people might look at you like who you look a little funny. So which. From the youth group. Kathy probably remembers the lesson we did on weird. It was a huge series we did you remember how long we did that. But we emphasize a lot on. Embracing the fact that it's OK to be weird. And. Just because everyone else's doing something doesn't mean you have to. There was a long conversation that. I don't think I will ever forget. Which was about Jesus turning the other cheek. Which we can have that conversation on the side some time. But the teens. They enlighten me that day. Fairly well. And I had the statement made. And verses. Eighteen through nineteen. Describe the way we once walked. The way in which the world walks. And the way. We must no longer walk. Now if he's in for twenty and twenty one. That is how. Her whoever. I have however. OK It is however. That however is not the way of life you learned. When you heard about Christ or thought and him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. The states that. As we've learned about Jesus and His teachings. The ways of the world tend to conflict with what we are to be. This brings me to the shirt I'm wearing. Nice. It's a collector's item. According to this right here. As a teenager I was a bit rebellious. I'm not sure if have you would agree with that or not. I think. I kind of varied compared to my brothers. I was not rebellious at all. I was the good one. But in my own right. I was rebellious. And a lot of the influence I got was from music. And my favorite artists happened to be Tupac. One of my favorite songs bought by him was me against the world. Which if you think about just what. The le alone is like OK all that makes sense it fits in with Paul's teaching. Because you don't want to be of the world. You're kind of against it to a degree in reality. The lyrics that were emphasized throughout the song or. Completely horrible. And the song Tupac describes how he's against the world. Constantly trying to make money while witnessing. All sorts of extreme violence. He happened to grow up around Baltimore California and New York. With a lot of violence surrounding him. And while it's. Him against the world it's him. Actually in the world. Just trying to get his own little piece of the pie. And try and be like me centered which many in the world. Are doing the same thing. It's a me first mentality. And those unable to get ahead. Are completely out of luck. So I often think about what if the millions of people that actually heard his music. Instead of hearing. Like all the negativity. And focusing on me me me would have actually been able to listen to Jesus is message. And to love one another and to care for one another like the church was built up to be. Unfortunately I don't believe Tupac went to church. Even though he did have a really huge cross on his back tattooed. I thought that was kind of cool as a kid. So. And as you grow closer to Christ. You tend to put new clothes on. And I've gradually done that with my music as well. I tend to listen a lot to the crane now. And. Kasey listen slot to any minea. I am proud of the fact that I rub that off on her. But in the Kray song there is one called Rebel. Which I think is off his third or fourth al led rebel. He describes how he's. Rebelling against himself and calls for and the ways of the world. Now because he wants to be like Tupac even though Tupac was an influence to him early on. But because of the example that he has set forth. And his day in age. Jesus was the epitome of what a rebel stood for. If you like. Really take into account everything that he was doing back at that time. He was a rebel. He wasn't fitting in at all. It's like Ferris's would say do this I'm going to do this because this is what wants me to do. And so rather than having the mindset of. Me against world. Jesus want everyone to love each other and to follow above all. And if Eason's for twenty two through twenty four. We have you. With regard to your former way of life. To put off your old self. Which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires. To be Main you. And the at ude of your minds. And to put on the new self created to be like . In true righteousness in verses seventeen through nineteen Paul. Instructed us to turn from the employ and says of Kocher vs twenty three twenty two through twenty four. Paul turns to the subject of our flesh. Urging us to update our minds from the version one point zero. Up to two point zero. Nothing like an upgrade in life right. We are to think of things. In the way that Christ's would. I should have put a comma there. We had to think of things in the way that Christ would not in the way. Is that where. Custom to do. So I have to take the shirt off. One because it's getting warm in here on. And my on my good cool. OK and to. This is no longer who I am. So I'm going to read the rest of the season for. An that is every through the last section of this chapter. That you open your hearts. And think of the things that may apply to you. Therefore. Each of you must put off Osgood and speak truthfully to your neighbor. For we are all members of one body. In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down. While you're still angry. And do not give the devil. A foothold. Anyone who has been stealing must feel no longer. The less work. Doing something useful with their own hands. That they may have something to share with those in need. Do not let any and wholesome talk. Come out of your mouth. But only what is helpful for building. Others. Up. According to their needs. That may benefit. Those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of . With whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bit in this. Rage and anger. Brawling and slander. Along with every form of malice. Be kind and comp ionate to one another for giving each other. Just as in Christ. forgave you. Now I know it's hard to break old habits. We are all creatures of habit and. We like doing the things we like doing. We don't like to let him go. But I ask that you go home. You read. The fees and. For seventeen through thirty two. And then pray that reveals an error that your weaken. And makes you aware of the error is that. Maybe you haven't been going along with. And this. And then take. And focus in on one thing. Because if you do. All of them. You're going to be completely overloaded and you won't be able to do it. So read through it. And then. Focus in on one thing. And try and change that. Try and make that behavior. Reflect who you are in Christ. Not just your old usual habit. If I went through that whole list I'd probably pick every single one for me. I'm sure there are instances where each one reflects. But you can only do one little thing at a time to gradually change. And then. As you get that one. Go back through and. Read it again and see where else you need to work. Don't stop growing. And I want to leave you with. One last verse. And I think this was a short sermon. Oh no I really thought that was. It was a lot shorter. So you guys are in trouble now. Because the short I think it is the long arm of the talk. And I'm going to be like Pastor. I'm going to. I think it through I know it's going to keep cool and. OK so. The last verse. I want to leave you with. Deals with a live shot. Not Alija. J. comes of for. Sh. That's how I remember it is running away from. I think it's a bell. Because he pretty much took away all her profits for baseball which was a that they prayed to. He's kind of like. Whatever. He was running away and. was like well why are you running. You like you're going in the wrong direction I need you to go this way. So gives him food and. He runs in the opposite direction again. And cars like to get over here. Finally a large Alyson's. And he goes. And he is going to take up an apprentice life. And what life does. Is phenomenal. Stupid. Crazy inspiring. And first kings. Nineteen. One thousand through twenty one. I probably didn't get this T.V. they're. Now. OK. So a lot just went from there and found a live shot son. Of chef it. I don't know how you say that. I'm just making this up. He was playing with twelve yoke of oxen. And he himself was driving the top pair. Alija one up to him and threw his cloak around him ally should then left his oxen and ran after Alija. I mean because my father and mother good bye he said. And then I will come with you go back. A larger replied. What have I done to you. So a lie she left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment. To cook the meat. And gave it to the people. And they ate. Then he set out to follow. Alija and became a servant. Now who is willing to take everything you have and burn it. No one would and neither. That's. That's wrong. But that's what a lie should did and the reason he did it is because he didn't want to go back to his old way of life. There is a book I've been reading called. All N.. I forget who the author is a lot of the times I think he's a little nuts. But I read the book try and pick up what I can from it and. The thing I never thought about was the fact that I did it because it was his moment to say OK I am. All and I am completely for this. I'm going to follow Alijah and. To me that's just so baffling. Crazy and inspiring. Because for some to take everything that they have and be late. OK I'm going to go ahead and get rid of this because this is my old way of life. And now I'm going to follow and his teachings to follow and. Really that's what we're all called to do. Extremely difficult in some cir stances. And others may be a little easier like giving up. Chicken curry. I don't know that I might be a rough one. But there are different things that we can take and pick up and apply from as the game example. So what that we can stand and OK. And let us pray. thank you for the. Decent roads. They could always be better by they could always be worse. Please allow us to see the positive things that you give to us and help us to be more like you and. Be able to just walk in your ways and treat each other the way that you would want to treat us. Or that you do treat us. It's just a name we pray. Amen.I don't know why I like standing up here. On the my pastor's talk to being down there. So much better I can actually see everyone better. For whatever reason. Just so all of you know today is the first day we are actually live streaming from the church. I set that up for. But. She's here today. So I did watch during the. Amen.
