The message that I have for today is found in Psalm one twenty one and the le is guardian father Guardian father and whenever we think of fathers. Of course you know we think back to probably our own father. But what I think of in not only from my own father. I think of his ability. He was always a very strong worker worked two jobs worked in the coal mines worked the farm. He was always you know always on time with always had to be be at the certain place at the certain time. C s had to be done it had to begin with a certain time you know six o'clock and five o'clock six o'clock in the morning and five in the evening. Everything began everything focused around those two times. But whenever we think of I was writing down some thoughts about father's working providing my dad was a disciplinarian. My mother would always say wait until your father gets home. Then she chased around the house with the ironing cord. Yeah. So she never caught us. But anyway it was always wait until your father gets home and discipline strength a strong hand firm secure. I never forget we used to have a lot of people come through our our home. My dad I don't know I guess we never really talked a lot about his childhood and I know that whenever he was a teenager or whatever he got on a train and he disappeared for about five or six years and came back home after that. We never really knew what happened during those years. But whenever we were growing up when I was growing up my dad would always bring people into our house you know like he would. He was must of known a judge or magistrate or something which people would come and work instead of go to prison. They would come to our house and we'd always have foster kids foster boys. We had at least sixteen I think that would stay had stayed at our home at one point or another. We had two foster boys A Stay with us for maybe twelve years and you know they were just like your own brothers. And but I never forget this one guy we had. He was a strong willed probably eight hundred nineteen year old individual and my dad really you know again he would try to help people always try to give them opportunities to change. Well I don't know if any of you've ever been able to pitchman or in your life. Well pitching manure in May sound like a very difficult job and it is especially if it's in a stall that cow's calves have been in for a whole winter. So whenever you would fit into the pen they would do that would go down about four or five feet you know from all the straw you'd put in over the winter. And so it was always a spring time job. Well this one guy and you know you became you became one with the manure. You became one with the smell maybe I should say it that way you became one with the smell and you didn't even you didn't notice it but this guy for whatever reason you know we knew enough not to go in the house with those clothes on we always hosed everything off and took one pantry whatever you would change and come into the house. This one guy decided he's just going to go in the house. And he walked in and sat down at the table and he didn't wash his hands. He didn't do anything. And my dad was across the table and very calmly or whatever said you know you need to go change your clothes and whatever and come back to the table. Well he decided that he wasn't going to do that and then and then he he decided he wasn't going to go changes boots and he decided he wasn't going to go to the barn again. Well my dad stood up reached across the table grabbed him lifted him out of the seat and said you either change or you either change your clothes or go pack your clothes and poof and put him back in the seat. He wouldn't change his clothes. I always remember that about my dad. You know he was you know he was he was very gentle. You know he was very. But you couldn't you know there were expected to do things. But even though he may become angry you never got out of his graces. And this individual that we were so my dad disciplined. He was not a very good person. It was one day we were standing you know walking out of the House and in comes a state trooper. A state trooper pulled into our driveway gets out of the car walks over and throws handcuffs on this guy and throws him in the car. He had been wanted for whatever. And just like Dad why do you let these people into our house. But that was my was my dad and my mom they were always just taking care of people always trying to help someone you would you know. I never heard my dad complain about the you know you come home from church on Sunday and there would be two or three cars in the driveway. You know they would just be waiting for waiting for their new G.'s to get home from church so they can have lunch you know. So they're going to the restaurant they came to the farm. So whenever you think of father I think of disciplinary I think of strength I think of a strong hand. No never. Whatever. Constant steady loving forgiving leading praying my dad always prayed every night read the Bible my mother that prayed together modeling modeling what they wanted you to be encouraging encouraging lifting there were a lot of demands but they were always there is always this encouragement there was always the expectation you can do this. It's not a problem. There was strength under control. I saw a picture I would like to get it sometime. It's this little girl. She's probably about three feet tall got a little you know she got a little dress on and it's her winter clothes you know and she's leading this horse and she's got one of these huge huge Belgian horses you know walking behind her and she's got a hold of the bridle and it has its head way down and she just walking along leading this huge horse you know. And I think of that as strength under control. There is this huge horse capable of you know lifting crushing but submitting itself to this little child leading it down the path. And in our life because we allow ourselves to be led by the Spirit and lead by and to become the person that wants us to be it doesn't mean we're sacrificing something. We're still that strong individual just like that horse that has that strength and and agility and power yet has the understanding to be able to allow a little child to lead them. And sometimes I think of our lives with our children grandchildren neighbor kids you know you're always you're always influencing someone you're always influencing someone and you know you never take the opportunity to just do. For a child. You know I was that we were at the. Where were we. It's the ice cream store. I put them up. No. Oh Valley dairy. There we go. We were Valley dairy and there was this baseball team came in and everybody was pushing and struggling for seats at the counter and there were two individuals who were not capable of getting on the counter and they didn't fuss they didn't see him they didn't push or whatever. They just went up there instead. So and I thought well you know I was pretty good. They're not complaining and they're not pushing other little kids off the off of the stool. So I went over to the guy and I said here if I'd always buy those two something extra because look how good they are. And he looked at me as like what I want you know what we need Biden something. And in fact the waitress had to come over and explain to him what I meant. And then he brought the five dollars back and said Here I don't Astaire you know I go buy the kid something. You know it's enough to kid something and just doing something good for someone else. What we do is set things in motion. It sets things in motion it enables us to mirror what is doing in our life. What is there that we deserve. doesn't give back to was based on what we deserve how we've performed. If did that we would all be in trouble. Fact we will be in such bad trouble we wouldn't be here because we'd be punished and beaten down and discouraged and whatever. But Todd isn't in that he doesn't do that he doesn't beat us down he doesn't have to have his own way. He is not so complicated that we can. Didn't see him that we can't see him in our in our faith and in His Word. I looked up to the mountains the Sama says. And really it's a psalm here of people making a pilgrimage. They're making this pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Andrew Slim is way up in the hills up in the mountains. The Dead Sea is one of the lowest places on Earth and going up through the the plains of Jordan there it's just it's a just a continual gradual and then up into the high hills of Jerusalem and Jerusalem sets up on the mountain up on the Hill and that the pilgrimage is they would come from the plains and they come from all over and they would look under the hills why because that's their destination. But my Strength doesn't come from the mountains. No matter how majestic how beautiful the mountains may be and no matter what the mountains may hold they hold the temple the place where dwells. They're beautiful but the mountains are not my source of strength my strength comes from who made the heavens and the earth and the mountains. You see I will look and I will see not only the beauty of the creation around me but I will recognize that my strength comes from It's who gives me strength it's who gives me the abilities and the power and he he places within us OK. He places within us all that we will have need of. And then after a place is long there has to be situations to bring them out and we find that the scripture that says All things work together for good to those who love and are called. Going to his purpose. The problem is we look at this morning now in the south after noon and wonder how is this going to be good. But you know looks at our childhood our King our twenty's. All the events of all these times. And he says look how they come together for good. Think about your life. Think about I mean only sometimes I must begin older because you know I think back over how we got here how the all the events that had to happen for us to be here and to and to stay here and to you know to be involved in the community and be involved with your lives and and how the these things had to be put together. And the divine problem the divine in all of this is being able to see that the difficulties were just as important as the blessings and the difficulties were just as important as the blessings because they left us now as we look back on this road the store was closed the store was opened the store was one. We met this person there we met that person and we find out how all of these things kind of work themselves together in is that work in our lives working these things together. But you know we have to allow the Spirit to speak through our hearts and to take us out of our preconceived ideas as to how is supposed to do all the stuff you know. I think all of us at some time or ever had a an idea of what success would be what it would be like to be successful. And you know. What is successful. Being the person that wants you to be and seeing how has moved and work these events around to our lives. My strength comes from and you see the strength that I have comes from the who made this place where my strength comes from the who sent the world and order in the planets in the stars and everything. He put all this into into place by speaking it into existence. He has all of these things so balanced that there are not even one one hundred thousands of a second off. And how that they spin and rotate and tilt there is they haven't changed one bit they haven't changed. A millimeter millisecond or a millimeter in ten thousand years. How'd that happen. put it there. And he balanced it. If does that with the universe doesn't need any do cannot do with our lives then as he is doing it with our lives. He calls upon us to have faith that is going to work. is at work in every situation. He's not the author of every situation but he is at work in every situation. He won't let you stumble. Your guardian won't fall asleep. You're not going to stumble. Well I was on my face a couple of times doesn't matter because as you stumbled you found yourself getting up again and going on and it wasn't really a stumble it was a stepping stone. It was something that worked out. You know I think of one of the one of the biggest as I thought of. I thought it was the biggest opportunities that I would have had in my life as far as staying in the area and being a chaplain and you know ministering to people. I thought it was going to be with the. Job economy as being the head of pastoral care and all that was going on and I went through all of the process you know put in the application talked to all the right people you know knew the right people in the right places and you know all this and they had fifty people or whatever twenty five people. Then they had ten and then they had five and then they had three and then they had one. They told me I had the job. Yes. The next day they called me and said they changed their mind. They had somebody else in mind. And they went through the whole process of evaluating again because they changed their whole perspective you know and I thought at that time this can't be right. I think I know I wanted me to have that job but I know he wanted me to have a job and all that but you know it wasn't long after that maybe six months later I had my first surgery oh my back and then I had a little later I had the second surgery on my back and it was in those places. I had Cat time. I was paid to be off on a catastrophic illness because I had all that time built up that winter I would have never had a day or a couple days only at Tottenham. And while I was off that's when I really started to focus on putting things together to write a book. And in reality it was those the back surgery that set the time off that set in motion the idea of trying to write a book and the outcome of that is still out there in front of us. But it's still we see how that as you're going through it you know laying in the hospital with staples in your back you know and run upright trying to put press and seal over my face. I thought that was funny. You know whenever you had the back surgery couldn't get wet. So we put presidency on it. You know she want to put on my face to help me relax. But then you know my guardian was watching over me. And how that our guardian father has a plan in that perfect and how that it all comes together and that is doing. We are going to see when life is over we're going to see how has brought everything to a conclusion to a purpose to a plan everything and that's why we as his children believe that is at work in all things and if we would but be thankful in all things we would find that our at ude in dealing with these things becomes different. And so they become less strenuous and strained you know doesn't create the strain in our life. your guardian right at your side to protect you. He's right there. You know if you're if your child was you told your child not to climb a tree. OK don't climb that tree out there. OK they climbed a tree while they're climbing the tree they slipped and they're hanging on for dear life. OK. And they're hollering for you Dad come and get me dad coming get maimed and you know well I told you not to climb that tree. You know did you did you listen to the radio. I am going to follow what is what are you going to now. Did you get all these c s done. If you can go along with his brother or sister or is his report. Our offer to pay up to date. What happens. We don't go through the history of all that each of all the stuff we would run to our child so that they wouldn't fall and hurt themselves and be killed that they wouldn't be hurt because of the comp ion in the grace and the mercy that in our lives we would change and we would be checking out their past. When you pray when we pray isn't saying Well David you remember when who David you remember how old I told you do go this way and you didn't. He doesn't do that. He doesn't set there and bargain with us. He's and He loves us more than we could ever imagine. And so he wants us to come to Him and believe that His word is true and that as we look under the mountains and look under the situations the situations aren't god they're just part of the landscape. lives within our hearts. He's your guardian right by your side. He is shielding you from sunstroke. He's your shade when things are hot. He is your heat. When things are cold. guard you from every evil he guards your very life. I think of Job Job sister you know Satan and are having this conversation and says to Satan Have you considered my servant job. Well yeah of course he's perfect in every way because you've got a protective but you see satan could not touch him without permission. And every time if Satan himself comes up and temps and tests our life has promised a double reward and that's what happened to a job. Everything that he lost he got backed up. All you see in our lives it's this type of encouragement and understanding that the devil himself no evil can touch you no evil no evil can touch your life. You've got to open the door and you gotta walk into it. will never allow it. It's not His Will His grace is mercy that so we are there and even in that situation . I see how has protected I remember my brothers they were not the most they grew up in the church and there were some very difficult things happened in the church that I grew up in and my three brothers basically walked away from in the church. But my mom never stop praying for them and all three of my brothers that walked away always all came back to their faith and the difficulties came but it was in the difficulties that they found their faith again and it is it isn't that it's that we have a responsibility not only to pray for one another but to believe that is going to keep our lives and he's going to bless our lives and he's going to hold us and shelter us. He's going to be our guardian he's going to be our keeper. He's going to be a very present help in time of trouble. So he's not going to. Well they do pray. Have you been really good. I will save you from this accident but I'm going to wait a minute if you know 's there. He's never so far away as to be just near us. He will be there by your side to protect you. guard you from every evil he guards your very life. He guard you when you leave and when you return he guards you now any guard you always. It means that. Going out coming in sitting down standing up walking around running to run. He is your guard. He is a very present help in every situation of your life not only with trouble but in good things and decisions that have to be made. is there to keep us watch over us. He is our father our father who watches over us. My heavenly Father watches over me and then amen amen. Guys come on down. Guardian Father
