This is a machine transcript of the sermon. It won't be completely accurate of what's said in the sermon.
This editor that were looking at today is in Luke chapter seventeen. Beginning in verse eleven through nineteen were reading out of the message Bible. I didn't know what to entitle the sermon on one of the things was I was thinking of a football term intentional grounding and explain a little bit intentional grounding is one of those the quarterback has the ball and if he drops back between the tackles. Uses center of the garden attack and he drops back between that imaginary line, and he throws the ball out of bounds or throws it is good to be your tackle for loss a throws it down. It's intentional grounding and they lose the down and they lose the yardage and all that kind of stuff, but females beyond that imaginary line, and he throws it throws the ball out of bounds or whatever it's okay so intentional grounding is that you're his intention was to catch it before he gets in trouble again, but he didn't get to the right place of throwing it out of bounds, so I will maybe you'll understand it. Maybe it won't. Maybe I'll change the title little later. I have no idea, but I just was thinking of it because in this particular place. We have the ten lepers and the ten lepers while the industry description find out what happens. It happened, and as he made his way toward Jerusalem. Mrs. Jesus, he crossed over the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village ten man all lepers met him. They kept their distance, but raise their voices calling out Jesus, Master, have mercy on us taking a good look at them, Jesus said, go, show yourself to the priest. They went in while still on their way became clean one of them he realized that he was healed, turned around and came back, shouting his gratitude glorifying God Ennio and Jesus be with so grateful he can't thank him enough and he was a Samaritan. Jesus said, were not then you where are the nine cannot be found to come back and give God glory to God except this outsider. Then he said to him, get up on your way, your faith has healed and saved you. Now we have here is a count of the ten lepers and it is the only time it is recorded in Scripture is herein and in Luke's gospel. Now link is the physician is a doctor of this time and this particular story must really move Luke, more than you know any of the other three writers because he sees if I may, perhaps, a medical perspective, but he also stays at from the perspective of the individuals and holiday people respond to certain situations and how that response into a particular blessing can be something that is very important to what really takes us further than the present blessing. So here we have ten people may well one return, so the intentional grounding is that these individuals. I look at the nine to get in return as individuals who fail in their task. They failed in their task to give thanks to God, and they think they gave up. They gave up there. The ball they gave up them. The situation to quickly and they could abate something more out of it with just a little more effort, but one of things as we look at this leprosy. Now we're not too familiar with this particular disease, but it is it is a horrible disease in which people and is still in some countries today and what happens is that there is a deadening of the nerves and so you can't tell like if you slander for hand in the door you couldn't tell that the nerves are gone, and then at the bruising in the bruising doesn't heal, and it just continues to work out a person 's life, so that the extremities their fingers and hand towels, and I really start to fall off and so it is a very debilitating disease, and one in which people looked at as a curse from God. So when people look at leprosy. They saw this as a punishment from God for some sin, and it wasn't it was a mark of God 's RAM. If God was really displeased with you. You were going to get leprosy again so they saw this as the worst of sinners would get this particular disease. The problem with this is an assumption. If that assumption based upon a wrong wrong premise. And sometimes we are intentionally grounding the ball when we don't have a problem. Sometimes we flew the wrong assumption are giving up to quickly on what God wants to do in our life, because we are wrongfully assuming a particular thought in this case God is now punishing me because of some sin in my life, present or past, and this is why something bad has happened, and often we try to find meaning for bad things happening to good people. We try to find meaning or some reason that things happen. Now we look at our situation then. Something 's job to step out in front of a car because you're not Clinton is not God 's fault. You are paying attention anyway. Every step offer something that wasn't a step up or step down on the weather. The last step when he went down. Now that God 's fault. I just not paying attention, so we find that there are assumptions that we have an especially in the Jewish culture. There was assumptions about& and antiwhite people were sick, and they would look at their disease. They would look at their sickness and believe that God was punishing them and they had this assumption, and especially in evaluating job time I read about it here about Joe. But it is well thought that God gave both good and evil, so good and evil came with your life solely by God himself, and that there was no evil one with evil intent. So here is Joe Job, chapter nineteen. Joe was speaking to his friends change of chapter nineteen, he speaking to his friends. He says all friends you have friends take pity on the God has come down hard on me. You have to be hard on me too. So Joe is under the assumption that God is doing this to him and his friends believe me if you have comforters like Job 's friends don't talk to them to let them go. Okay just let them go if there are people who are just now you better straighten up your life because look at all the bad things happening to your life, you've got to be a really bad person and you're just no good. Those people you let them go by. This is the right is the story uses it hot in here open window on hot, but I'm always not to have such a big then there's a storm rolling. I use in all my support group to things when I start talking to people about you know about grief and loss in their inner, they're having problems dealing with people, stupid people and the river. One time we had this couple in our church day. This is way back, way back many years ago. So wasn't here, so don't think we were talking about it isn't here. This couple came to our door and they were back with the people. Okay, and they were cleaning out their freezer at the bottom of their freezer. They found. This package and a surprise there. We don't know particular its groundhog will limit you have something being the nice kinds and you know people that we are thank you. Now I will need it, but I knew my husband and I was. I give it to the dog by a neighbor thought maybe he would die, not my doctor that have about a half, so I took it and I wasn't going to offend them down and tell them if you only do what you think I will either for your causing her to do that but then they couldn't say they probably throw out that even somebody mother give the preacher is always food. He looks like a starving. So anyhow I was there and I always use this illustration that it's called the stupid pile that people will give you information that makes absolutely no sense they themselves would never do it they themselves would never, where they themselves would never be a part of it, but they want to give it to you so you just take that and say thank you very much and I know when we do with all putting this stupid so you don't have to worry. You don't have to barrack you don't have to adhere to it. So this is Job 's friends. They are giving Job a lot of stupid advice based upon a wrong assumption. What is the assumption God is punishing Joe why because he's lost everything what this family of children is what the house is lost as well. These more camels. He lost his parents he's lost everything and dog gone and now the effect so don't be hard on the chilies asking his friends. Please don't be so hard on involving my words were written in the book. Better yet chiseled in stone. I wish everybody could know how I think about this. Still, I know that God lives in one who gives me back to life and eventually he'll take his family, your old job was the first one to recognize there is a resurrection in the King James. It says that in the end, my Redeemer limit and at the end of the day he should review shall stand upon your at hand. Eventually the settlement and I'll see him, even though I get skinned alive. Now if they won't tell being skinned alive. What's going on with Joe. Joe has these sores all over his body and he's usually a broken picture to scrape them. Okay, he's scraping his sores and then the losing junk out of his source. He's taking it. This broken picture of blasting, scraping his source, and he says even though I get skinned alive. This isn't just a metaphor. This is this is something going on in his life. It doesn't have Saban and the home care nurse coming to see him. He has only his friends, and upon a pot with a piece of broken pottery that is using to scrape his sword and scrape the skin and innovative scandalize. I will say God myself with my own eyes I will see him the job was saying. I may get in the live and die in the old that anything games it says that my body be consumed basically by the warmth of your that in that in the end of the time I was standing on the street on placebo. Lots thing. So Joel has great faith in this whole sex situation. They verse twenty eight twenty nine he addresses his friends. If you're thinking. Whether they contribute already indicated, and how can we get thrown to him. How can I get through the Job to see that his trouble is all his own fault, forget it is done. I don't think that you convinced me that the Psalm. I'm doing* worried about yourself. Worry about your sins and God 's coming judgment for job judgment is most certainly on its way. So you'd think that his friend would listen to what he has to say first chapter twenty verse one, subpart from Namath again took his third and this is Joe's friend I can't believe what I'm hearing you look at my teeth on and my stomach is in or not. How dare you insult my intelligence like this while here's a piece of my mind is where Joseph interrupted and says Disney don't get me a piece of my mind. Don't get me a piece of your mind, you don't have enough to share the Peninsula at the sarcastic? was he say that you know the basics of how things have been since the earliest of days when Avenue were first placed on the earth the good times of the wicked are short-lived, godless, July is only monitored momentary evil might become world famous striding to the head of the celebrity Parade still in the end they end up Apollo done job. Your ideas just because wisely. This is the this is the font that was part of John's culture and it is still the thought that as part of the culture at the time of Jesus, no lepers believe that they were being punished by God, and that if this problem they had not the leopard. Maybe leopards didn't believe it, but everybody else believe that the that leprosy was the person God, and these people were being punished for something I'm sure that the ten lepers and most likely thought like Joe. We didn't do anything to deserve this, but everybody else had that assumption. They must have some secret sin somewhere so what I Jesus searches out the ten lepers. He was on his way to Jerusalem, and he is traveling the road between Samaria and Galilee. It was here he is about to enter a town, but the ten lepers spoke up, so these ten lepers that cannot come to where Jesus is because there is restrictions on where they can travel and that they cannot be in crowds to the not allowed to be around people so they are ostracized their cut off from society and the only way they be eaten. Make a living in some of their families would take food somewhere. Let it for them, and then they would pick it up and even things like that sold there were these ten guys who work together. They had found a common bond, leprosy, and that they were doing their thing together so Jesus went to meet them to God has a way of working things into our life showing up at certain places certain intersections certain places and times of our life. He shows up there and how to be now how did this happen given the people in certain places certain times like it's funny how just thinking about truth is a you think about it wisely and we talked about a good way Gilleland, and their daughters, and we were talking about and then show up. Wow, what a coincidence coincidence what divine timing what divine timing. So Jesus is here and they show up so we think attend the lepers would talk about the beast think I together would think they would talk about things can't get any worse, and where the lowest point of our life. I don't deserve this. I didn't do anything that should bring this on. Maybe they are dead men walking. I'm sure they may have some of these thoughts, but then you have other dreams. Maybe they thought that one day they would be well again, and this at that time would be totally unheard of. Maybe leprosy would go into remission or something would happen that they would be well or they were misdiagnosed or something, but there was no medicine. The results your but perhaps that help inside of them because they are looking for Jesus, that we come back to ourselves, what do we dream up what we have in our heart and causes us to go forward in our dreams for tomorrow and I hope for tomorrow and they may seem completely out of touch him where we can be and what we could do in our natural, which is a sometimes it's like this that we are we are in an isolated place and that we were in a place where things would dictate to us a whole different and a leprosy and death and separation and Jesus walks by. Suddenly inside of us, there is hope for the drain the reply were impossible. The phase is a substance talked about this in our Sunday school lesson if it is an underlying foundation is a title deed to something that we are going to go and possess things like meowing like talk about it on your tractors and cars. You know, things like that but you can imagine having a title deed to a car that you bought you purchase a block purchase for you and somebody gives you the title deed that you go to the dealership and safe. Here's the title, the deeds of that car. I want to pick it up fully paid for while in our faith in our prayers. It's like God is giving us a deed of title faith to pray for something that is not really our possession but we can go pick it out by faith and by faith. It is brought into our life is something. This substance is evidence is very real. And so here are these people, these can, and they have a dream and they have an idea that maybe someday they could be well because if they had no dream, they would've never see when we have a dream and we have faith, we ask, we pursue we go after that believe these can only have faith and belief in Christ because they went after him. They pursued him and they kept their distance, but they raise their voice and called out, they raise their voice and they called out. Imagine that the shared dream with the shared dream. There's Jason Miller as a congregation. We have dreams of what God will do in our community and our church. We have a lot to cross the street. They were all going to pray about. We have people that we look around that are not here concerned about. We pray for shared dreams don't have individual expectations with individual things going on in our life that we pray about that we are in motion towards the sea. These twelve may have shared their dream of each other that one day they will be well again one day they will be with our families again one day will be able to walk among people and not have to cry out unclean, unclean and the people will look at them and say you're cursed by God. You must've done something really bad, and there like what I do some traveling as a group by Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. Jesus Master, have mercy on when Jesus taught us to pray when you say our father, our Jesus is sharing with us the expectation that we are in this together bear one another's burdens. Pray for one another, so they shared a prayer and shared expectation. More importantly is the understanding that Jesus here and here with us. He's here Jesus is with us universe, the Scriptures tell us that you cannot you cannot escape the presence of God. You cannot escape the presence of God. If you take the wings of the morning and traveled the speed of light and go to the first part of the world UK the present that is not well, there's no way away from the value you're in the presence of God. So Jesus is here shared prayer prayed with one another shared expectation shared expectation, adrenal belief verse fourteen. Jesus taking a good look at them. He said, so taking a good look at them in a distance because the seller yourself to the priest. There's no great prayer known as none of the yell is no spitting on the ground with minor eyes, certain arise. There is no lay hands on this just goes to show yourself to the priest. Now this was a requirement because the priest was the judge he had the final say and so they would naturally think that this is a curse from God, because the guy who to excommunicate you from the front everybody is the praise and viruses. You can get back in communication with briefs with the people and be around people is the price of the Temple, and so they are to demolish old assault. The priest and the priests would be the jot of their leprosy and the one who had sent them into exile must be the one who would declare them capable of going back around people so the priest represents God. Now as we look at these ten what was there great act of faith. What was the great activated these ten had to complete into what I have to do go see the phrase okay, now you don't want to go dip in the river. You don't want them on the ground in the last call down fire from heaven. You don't want to offer sacrifice. You will want to pray for forty eight hours. You no go. Offer yourself so they started off going towards the brief, go, show yourself to the priest. They went they obeyed what Jesus had told the old baby of obedience brings about an expectation if I said stand up. Okay, what breezes, practices, and I would stand up while why life am I doing you know, if somewhat saying, and the you pay attention somewhat, saying that there is some expectation of something he wants to do so. There was an expectation in our prayer and every time, every time we do something, there's an expectation or you wouldn't know it. Think about something you you perform without an expectation on him, never cook something expecting it to be terrible. Okay, so that of Antioch on the back if you really think if you anytime while you won't forget you guys got aligned on the Internet. Why is my expectation is nobody likes it neither relies on top of it so you don't have a positive expectation. Most the time you don't feel it. If we do well after a task believing that it's going to be wrong and terrible. It generally has you wouldn't be bad. I had to do it anyhow themselves with only do it. It sounds so sorry shop. The facility shall show your self to the brief they went they did. And this was their great accomplishment is that God is not complicated and faith is sent, it are misconceptions that get in the a our understanding and the simplicity of our faith. I would spend a lifetime and be the most murdered person on the planet not figure out God cannot figure out and understand God completely present. I can do but yet God is not complicated, nor it is faith. Faith is just simple that it is a responsibly. We haven't every day we we act in faith every day I sent you turn on the light Holocaust works you used to Paul, Paul Addison accepted sixteen. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved in a household, there is this odd jailer Paul and Silas are beaten and thrown in jail and about midnight they start raising and praying everything in earthquake comes the doors open and they're all free. While the jailer thinks everybody's bed. I miss everybody's laughed and he figures he have to kill himself because he is responsible for the people in jail, and if there gone. He said so he's going to kill himself and the gel. I got it I got a torch on. Ran inside badly shaken. He collapsed in front of Paul and Silas. He led them out of jail and asked Sirs, what do I have to do to be saved in name and date. If you really live, and they said what your entire trust in the master Jesus, then you live as you were meant to live and everyone in your house included. Put your entire trust in the master sheet. This is a setting in which someone hasn't an expectation that you intensely grounded here and he's been. That he's dropped the ball and you get a die while faith with simple belief. The sad thing here in the story of the ten lepers verse fourteen. They went in while they were on. They wear while they were on their way. They became clean all ten leprosy was gone. One of them. When he realized that he was healed, turned around and came back, shouting his gratitude glorifying God. He kneeled at Jesus feet so grateful he couldn't thank him enough and he said, and he was a Samaritan. Those Americans were out of the despised people of the Jews and Jesus said, were there not ten healed. Where the nine where the nine you see the nine had the wrong thinking the wrong assumptions. First of all, they didn't deserve this. It is in the first place. Godzilla taken this from them a lot sooner than he did. And you see where entitlement takes us entitlement says I deserve better than this. I finally got what I deserved, and we can take it and we go along with almost like wow, it should happen long time ago and if I I did what I was supposed to do, and I got what I got the reward for an ongoing and we talked about seed and and I said about how the new plant seed in your eyes that more Bob I planted one seating the upcoming tomatoes. The forty one tomatoes, level one tomato plant. I forget, but Bob didn't do the work. Why did you like the plan C plan plan came from one seat and he got forty one tomatoes if you have taken those forty one tomatoes think of all the thing down. Provided was a hybrid off and landed those forty one states and planted all the season. The forty one tomatoes make tomatoes when you gotten so you see a has a reward. It causes us to plan and causes something to happen from that seat is a lot taken from it and what happens here is that the that midnight take their seats. Wow, I'm clean and they walk away or not can feel where the nine ungrateful ungrateful and gratitude a compliment. Left unsaid is a wasted slot you have the ability to make people happy. You have the ability to plant a seed in people 's lives to be the encourager to be the helper will you know we could meet because we don't know when to give those relatively think you should even I only give you what I can't stand. So here give away things that are good that her true that her lovely figure of a good report. Give them plan them in people 's lives because ill coral things where the nine thousand nine. We don't want to be part of the nine you see we have accountability web accountability for thoughts of our actions look at what we had and when then you look at this and we have a prejudice about it and we can say this is all mine and I deserve it is a wrong assumption. The life is about me and my and mine cannot tend not to be found to come back and glorify God except the outsider is very young people walked away with what they wanted but they did not know there was more to be had. You see, there was more to the healing. Then just being cleansed from their leprosy. The Samaritan turned around and came back, shouting his gratitude glorifying God. He nailed at Jesus feet so grateful we cannot thank them enough and he was a Samaritan. He may then make sure that the outside Abbas is is is a good reflection on the inside of us. The make sure that the outside Abbas is a good reflection on the inside of us. The he was changed inside by what happened to him outwardly giving thanks to God is our privilege and it's our responsibility to be thankful to God, ill be happy that now because everything goes well, but because God is with us in everything I was with me and everything to turn back and look to God, and I was was the great privilege of all ten but only one made himself of that opportunity. Only one of them made themselves of that opportunity. This is the challenge that is the read about that didn't turn to look to God, who is provided for our live, declares outwardly are inward change, and this is where we are to be thankful. Thankful people, you only singer courses in stop and sing the songs instantly something that brings out the joy in China, but because it speaks so much of what God has done for us. It presents the loss so much of how God has brought us at two different place in our life. He fell at his feet. He fell at his feet and cry favor was bestowed upon him the rest of them. They had Eric your but the Samaritan was made whole. This is what God wants to do in each of our lives is what he did for the Samaritan is that the rest of them had their healing. They would, they can have their leprosy, but the power of Christ was alive inside of them. There was a completeness in this letter, and that's where we are at. There is a completeness inside of us. You see Job 's crisis was he lost everything, but he knew of God, and he was eventually restored and his ideas of God 's understanding of God were correct. The jail where the earthquake. The doors were open and he was afraid that his life was over, but his life had just begun because he found the Paul and Silas were there to give him the message of Jesus Christ. The lepers all ten were sick chamber. He'll build one was restored, and that the completeness of what God wants to do in our life is a completeness that is inside of us and now we are one with God that God has done this work inside a Muslim challenge doesn't change that. From who we were and who he wants us to be. That's the great thing about coming back to God worshiping God and thanking him for all the good things he's done in our life is like phrase as part of who we are the changes at this reflection of what's on the inside so with them. Payment father. We are so privileged to be your children. God will so privileged to be your children that we have. We are made complete can you the circumstances don't dictate the last our lives, our faith does let us not drop the ball. Let us not intentionally ground ourselves intentionally ground ourselves as something that is not really true. The truth of the matter is we are grounded in Christ we are restored to the place, the place where God can walk with us and talk with us and we are his children forgive us of our sins forgive us of our ingratitude. Forget I saw Lord of our thinking so much about ourselves that we don't see your hand upon us and that we do not return to you to give thanks of all the good things that you have done. I ask your blessing now upon us upon each of your children upon the things of God that are about us. The decisions that are made, God, you are their guide us in our choices guide us in our attitudes. God is the Lord. We might become that person. That man, the woman of God, we pray in Jesus name and everyone said amen. God bless youThis editor that were looking at today is in Luke chapter seventeen. Beginning in verse eleven through nineteen were reading out of the message Bible. God bless you
